Happy Fall Y'all!

Today is the first official day of fall!  Finally!

You know that I love pumpkin flavor during the fall, but following a close second is apple cider!  I was so excited when I found this recipe for Apple Cider Cupcakes that I just had to give it a try.

These cupcakes are excellent frosted (recipe follows cupcake instructions) or without. The texture is dense, almost like a muffin, so why not enjoy it without frosting for breakfast?! The original recipe came from Wishes and Dishes, but I changed it just slightly to fit my tastes and baking style.

Apple Cider Cupcakes
Cupcake Ingredients:  2/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla 1 2/3 cup flour, sifted 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup apple cider
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  2. Cream together butter and sugar using an electric mixer.  Add the eggs and vanilla until combined.  3. Whisk the remaining dry ingredients together in a separate bowl.   4. Alternate adding the cider and the dry ingre…

Avast ye Maties- It's Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!

If you have been following Gardenias and Glitter for any length of time you know that I am pretty sure that I was a Pirate Princess in a former life (or maybe a Mermaid....). I grew up in an area steeped in Pirate lore, with stories of treasure and all sorts of sea going adventure. Anytime that we can celebrate being a pirate, you know that I have to join in!

Now, I do not know who decided that Talk Like a Pirate Day was to be on a Monday, and a rainy Monday to boot. This pretty much precluded us from having a deck party like last year (which you can see here), but there is no reason why we can't "swill a pint or two of grog".

So I started thinking about what type of drink a Pirate Princess like myself would enjoy on a rainy Talk Like a Pirate Day.  Of course, it goes without saying that it would have to include rum and then I thought about the weather and of course, I came up with a...

Fall Faves- What I am Looking Forward to this Fall

I know, fall doesn't "officially" begin until September 22, but let's face it- after Labor Day, it is fall for all intents and purposes.  We might as well celebrate it!

Make no mistake about it- I am a warm weather girl and part of me mourns the end of summer each year.  But I must say that Fall is probably my favorite season.  It is still warm enough that I can usually get by with shorts and a T-Shirt during the day (I wear flip-flops until almost Thanksgiving!), but not so warm that I "glow".  (Every Southern woman knows that "horses sweat, men perspire and women glow!").  The leaves start to turn glorious shades of color and we get to enjoy our beaches, museums and other attractions without so many tourists. (Bless their hearts- we love to see them come and we love to see them go!)

But what I am I looking forward to this fall?  Well let's see-

Warm fuzzy socks! I might wear flip flops during the day, but once fall "officially" begi…

What Happened to Summer?

Well, here it is- Labor Day weekend and we are facing the remnants of a Hurricane and the traditional, if not calendar, end-of-summer.  I am personally wondering where it went.  It seems like just yesterday I was waiting for my daughter to come home from college with plans to have deck parties and a big vacation and now, I am trying to figure out how it is September already!

So in order to distract myself from the wind and rain outside my window and to feel better about the demise of summer, I looked back over the pictures I took over the past couple of months to prove to myself that I actually did have a nice summer.  And you know what? It may not have been what I originally planned and I certainly worked more than any college professor on summer break should have had to do, but I did have a nice summer.

I spent a lot of time outdoors enjoying my deck and my flowers.

I walked a lot of miles with my dog, spending time in the beautiful sunshine that I will miss when February gets here.  I…

Back to School Crafts

We Southern girls will monogram anything and if we can do it in our school colors, then that is all the better!  This year I decided to personalize some supplies for family members who are going back to school using their initials and school letters in school spirit colors.

One thing you never have enough of in college is storage.  Whether it is for school supplies, bathroom necessities or kitchen equipment, there is never enough space in a college dorm or apartment to organize everything that a girl needs.  This little basket has my daughter's initials on one side and her school letters on the other.  Her school colors are blue and yellow.

When you start off at a new school you have to have to stock up on stuff in your school colors. My cousin is just starting middle school this year.   This little cup has her initial on one side and her school letters on the other.  The colors are blue and silver. You can't really see the blue and silver polka dots on the cup, but they are …
