Rock and Roll Back to School

When my children were in middle and high school we would create a Back to School Playlist to listen to in the car and during our Back to School Party (see here).  Since this is back to school week at Gardenias and Glitter, I thought I would share a sample Playlist with you.

Not all of the songs are appropriate for all age groups.  When creating the list the plan was to listen to some school-themed songs that my teen and 'tween kids would enjoy, that were age appropriate and would not drive me crazy.  There may be one or two on the list that are just for Moms driving the mini-van away from the carpool lane and trying to feel like an adult for a few minutes!  All of the songs are available on iTunes if you don't already have them in your collection.

"Be True to Your School", Beach Boys- When I was a teen I was in love with the Beach Boys and this was one of my favorites.  Perfect for back to school and football season. Check out this cool video- Be True to Your School .…

College and Quilts

It is that time of year again! Most of the local college kids are back at school and beginning class this week.  It is hard to believe that once again summer is over, my daughters are at their respective schools and I myself will be heading back into the classroom in a couple of days.  It has been a harried few weeks of preparing everything a college kid needs, this time moving into new apartments. The beginning of classes will almost be a relief!

One of my favorite gifts for sending a student off to his or her first day of college or for graduation is a quilt in their school colors.  I finally finished my daughter's graduation quilt (see her graduation celebration here) just in time for her to take it when she left for graduate school this past weekend.  My daughter's high school, college and now grad school colors are blue and yellow.

This is a simple patchwork quilt.  I got the dimensions from diaryofaquilter.comhere.  I like this pattern because it is easy, quick and the lar…

"Gotta Catch Them All!"

Confession time once again- I play Pokemon Go.  I know, I am way too old and I have much better things to do with my time, but my daughters and I have been on a Pokemon hunt for the last few weeks.

And I enjoy it.  We have an excuse (not that we really needed one) to get outside and walk around. We've met people and explored places that we probably would never have seen. No, I am not battling or training Pokemon (I don't even know what that means!), I don't hunt while driving or trespass on people's yards (or cemeteries),  but it is kind of interesting to see little creature pop up in unexpected places.

I met this guy on my walk the other night.

This little guy was waiting for me when I left the beach.

And of course, you already saw the one that jumped on my Hemingway novel on Daiquiri Day a couple of weeks ago.
So for some reason, I decided to make a cake (not that I need an excuse for that either!) and I modeled it after the Pokeball that you use to "catch&qu…

Happy Root Beer Float Day!

What better treat than a Root Beer Float on a hot summer's day?

When I heard that today is National Root Beer Float Day, I knew that I had found the perfect excuse to kick back on the deck in the shade and enjoy one of my summer favorites!

Of course, you know how to make a root beer float- place two (or three!) scoops of vanilla ice cream into a mug (preferably frosted) and fill the glass with your favorite root beer.

If you want an adult version, see this recipe from Clinton Kelly that we talked about in a post last fall. You can click through to that recipe here. Yum!

And if root beer is not your favorite drink, why not make an old-fashioned ice cream float with your preferred carbonated beverage?

I hope that you get a chance to sit back and enjoy this beautiful summer weekend with your favorite frosty treat!

Thanks for stopping by today!

Happy Watermelon Day!

According to www.watermelon.org, the first recorded watermelon harvest was in Egypt about 5000 years ago.  I doubt if they needed a special day to celebrate this delicious summer treat, but apparently we do!  National Watermelon Day is held on August 3rd every year.

I love a good water melon.  Is there anything better than an ice cold watermelon on a hot summer day?  I don't think so, but cookies come close!

These cute watermelon cookies begin with a cookie mix.  I found the recipe about 16 years ago in Favorite Brand Name Bake Sale Cookbook, a gift from my aunt.  I post my version here, but you can actually begin with your favorite sugar cookie recipe and follow the directions.

Watermelon Slice Cookies
I package sugar cookie mix
1 egg
Scant 1/4 cup vegetable or canola oil
1 1/2 tablespoons water
Red food coloring
Green food coloring
Mini chocolate chips or chocolate sprinkles (jimmies)

Combine mix, egg, oil and water.  Stir until blended.  OR
