Happy National Flip Flop Day!

According to the Tropical Smoothie Cafe's website, the company started National Flip Flop Day on the third Friday in June as a way to show appreciation for their customers.  Later, they joined forces with Camp Sunshine to raise funds for the camp and to provide for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

So, if you go into Tropical Smoothie Cafe today between 2 and 7 p.m. wearing flip flops you can get a free 24 ounce Jetty Punch Smoothie.  Other companies have jumped on the bandwagon and are offering freebies and discounts as well, including Old Navy which is offering free flip flops to the first fifty customers in their store on Saturday, June 20 and $1.00 flip flops for the rest of the day.

Now, I am a big fan of the flip flop and I pretty much wear them daily from mid-April through October.  I will be donning my favorite flip flops of the year- my already well-worn  Lilly Pulitzer from Target- and heading over for my free smoothie and to make a donation to this good cause.

Of course, if there is a holiday, I have to post a cake or some other treat, so here is a picture of a birthday cake I recently made for my aunt who lives at the beach and appreciates a good flip flop as much as I do.

The flip flops are fondant of course, but the "sand" is Vanilla Wafers run through the food processor.  Not too long, you want the "Sand" to vary in texture, just like the real stuff!

So, if you have a favorite pair of flip flops like I do and need a sweet cold treat on a hot day- head on over to get your smoothie!  Maybe I will see you there!

In other news- today is the 17th anniversary of Disney film Mulan which opened in 1998.  Here is a picture of me meeting Mulan last December during our trip to Walt Disney World.  (You may notice that I was wearing flip flops then too!)  This was my first "Princess Picture."   This is also the perfect time for me to announce that next week is Disney Week here at Gardenias and Glitter.  There will be crafts and treats and other tidbits for a fun trip to Disney (or a Disney movie night)!

Thanks for stopping by!

Cynthia
