Beachin' It!
A few weeks ago, we visited with another couple down in the Outer Banks. Truly, one of my favorite places, OBX is a series of islands that lie between the mainland of North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. There is something for everyone down there from beaches (both ocean and sound side), great seafood and shopping to tourist sites such as the site of the first flight of the Wright Brothers, a great aquarium and lots of pirate lore. This particular trip we visited with one of the most famous lighthouses on the east coast, The Cape Hatteras Light, one of three on the Outer Banks. The visit inspired some crafting. This time, with my Cricut.
This cut is from SVGcuts. I adapted it to look like Hatteras light by changing the colors, including adding black to the rim of the top level to make it look a little more like the real thing. I embossed bricks for the foundation. I took a panel out of the top level in order allow for more space between the fence and the light. You really can't tell from this picture, but there is a tea light in the upper windows.
I took this picture of Hatteras light on the day we visited. I didn't brave the climb to the top this time, but it has an awesome view of the area.
Inspired by the trip, I decided to create a Beach themed tablescape out on the deck this weekend with the lighthouse as part of the centerpiece. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans! We have had rain (and the muggy weather that comes with it) for the past two days. I have my fingers crossed for sometime this week if the rain ever stops.
As part of the tablescape, I thought I would carry on with the lighthouse idea and add placecards. Since this week's Fantabulous Cricut Challenge is Beach, these cards, with a lighthouse image cut from the "Life's a Beach" Cartridge, fit right in with the theme.
In order to make the lighthouse on the place cards a more solid image I used the contour tool to create a background on which to glue the stripes. Of course, the light is a rhinestone (why not?)
The lighthouse in this cut reminds me of the Bodie Island Light, also on the Outer Banks. I can't find my pictures of that lighthouse (another project-organize photos!), but the stripes are horizontal and black.
So, fingers crossed that we can enjoy our little al fresco beach themed dinner this week. If the sun comes out, I will share our tablescape in an upcoming post.
In the meantime, hop on over to the Fantabulous Cricut Challenge Blog to see what Beach themed projects the talented crafters have shared.
